Tadpoles is a prologue to the composer’s work Frogs. In this piece, the audience hears the young creatures beginning to leap, growing more confident with each jump, until they reach a joyous hoping conclusion. Trombone glissandi, Flex-a-tone, and slide whistle compliment this whimsical piece for young band that uses only the first seven notes that beginners are introduced to. An excellent exercise in teaching “leaps,” this piece also comes with an optional alternate horn part that is set in a lower range to accommodate all teaching situations.
